Examing the lore and tradition of Trick or Treats
Trick or treating is the tradition of dressing in a costume and going door to door collecting free candy from friends and neighbors. The term trick or treat derives from the beginnings of the activity and was originally meant to warn homeowners give me a treat or else I'll play a trick on you. Today, the phrase is used just as tradition.
Nowadays, most people give out candy to trick or treaters. It's sold in supermarkets and other retail stores in special large packages that contain small, individually wrapped, snack size pieces of popular candies. But not that long ago, candy wasn't the only treat given. Just 30-40 short years ago, children were given home-made treats, such as candy apples, cake and cookies. Sadly, that delicious practice has fallen out of favor in today's modern world due to the dangers posed.
What's more, in recent history, trick or treating has become less and less popular, especially in the United States. As parents and children alike slowly discovered, even factory sealed treats are not always safe when they come from strangers. Instead many people today are turning to the Halloween party as a safer means of enjoying Halloween fun.
At Halloween parties adults and kids alike dress up in costume and participate in themed activities. Common ones are: playing spooky games, watching scary movies and the ever-popular best costume contest.
Halloween parties are safer alternative to trick or treats for your children. The children still get to dress up as their favorite characters, enjoy sugary treats and play around with their friends. But the food and environment are safer since no strangers are involved.
